Getting back to the basics!
1 cup milk
Hot cocoa mix
6-8 ice cubes (or "chocolate ice cubes", directions below)
Decide if you'll be using regular ice cubes or chocolate ice cubes. This will determine how much cocoa mix you need.
With Regular Ice: Double the manufacturer's recommended quantity of cocoa or hot chocolate mix. With Chocolate Ice: Use a single serving recommended for your favorite cocoa or hot chocolate mix.
Why double up? Because your ice is going to melt and water will dilute the drink.
By the end, you'll be left with chocolate-flavored water and that's no fun.
Because we're making a cold version of cocoa, it may take a little more time to dissolve all of the cocoa mix. Take your time and stir the drink until you see no more chunks of powder. It's best to add the milk in a slow, steady stream while stirring to avoid clumping.
Put the cocoa or hot chocolate mix in a glass. Slowly stir in the milk or milk alternative. When the mixture is smooth, add the ice cubes of your choice.
The benefit of making chocolate ice cubes is that as the ice melts, your iced cocoa will get diluted with more cocoa instead of water. Consider it an extra little treat that is worth the time.
For one cup of milk, you will use one serving portion of the hot cocoa's recommended amount for normal hot chocolate.
Whisk the hot chocolate or hot cocoa mix with one cup milk (or the milk alternative of your choice). Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray. Freeze overnight, or until the "chocolate ice cubes" are solid.
Beyond this iced cocoa recipe, you can use the chocolate cubes in other drinks. Almost any iced latte will take the melting chocolate nicely and you can always store these in a tight container in your freezer to use at a moment's notice. If you like, switch the two around and make latte ice cubes to add a hint of coffee to your cocoa.
